“Just a Swire (Suire/Suir) from Grand Chenier”

This song has been making it’s way around the Cajun e-mail circles. According to the kbon.com forums, it’s by a band called “The Honky Tonk Band.” Listen here and sing along.

I’m just a a Swire from Grand Chenier
I drink my beer and moonshine too
I love de rain. And Mary Jane.
I like to sang and play de guitar and dat’s the troot.

Got me a Camp Out in da swamp
I get out dere whenever I want
I hunt at night with da big spot light
The game wardon tole me dat it was ok until I get caught

I’m just a a Swire from Grand Chenier
I drink my beer and moonshine too
I love de rain. And Mary Jane.
I like to sang and play de guitar and dat’s the troot.

I shoot dem duck out of my truck
I brang my dog. She brang me luck.
And den we go home. Back to duh camp.
And eat some gumbo jumbalie till I get da cramp.

I’m just a a Swire from Grand Chenier
I drink my beer and moonshine too
I love de rain. And Mary Jane.
I like to sang and play de guitar and dat’s the troot.

Repeat myself..
I like to sang and play de guitar and dat’s the troot.

My great Grandmother’s maiden name was Suire and I’m sure this is a song she would have loved. I second Mark’s vote for this to be the official “Suire Song”.

My dad was a member of the Ole Timers Cajun Band in Lafayette, “Issac Sonnier” and the song reminded me so much of him. Lots of fun, enjoyed it alot, He has been gone for almost 20 years now.

This is another example of the Southwest Louisiana cultural gumbo. This is the best place in the world to pass a good time and this music tells it all.

I am a transplanted Cajun lonely for all things Cajun and living far away in Washington, DC. This is the bomb!! I don’t know any Suires but I do know Grand Chenier very well as my family is down the bayou. THANKS for the reminder of what is important. I almost sang the line about going to the camp “whenever I can”. But you have it right. “Whenever I WANT.”

Hey I really liked the song and the music. I am a Swire (spelled Swire same family as Suire)from Grand Chenier. I have lived all my life in Grand Chenier, until Hurricane Rita. My grandfather moved from Erath to Grand Chenier.
This is for Sunnie T, who was your father that taught school in Grand Chenier when students went to school in a paddle boat? I would like to know who grew up in Grand Chenier and went to school with Dudley (Pumpkin) and Rudolph (Rudy) Swire?

  27. Darrell Swire April 11th, 2007 9:09 am

Let’s set things straight people, I am of the Swire family in queston, and we all spell it SWIRE as spelled on the album cover. I grew up on North Island were the family in queston all originated from. My grand parents Henry Swire and Clarissa Swire had 12 children my mother being Elora Swire. We surived hurricane Audry in the attic of three rooms which broke off from the main house. I graduated South Cameron in 1968, McNeese in 1975 after coming out of the Army.
But I never forgot my roots and am proud to be a cajun!

  33. Nancy Darlene (Swire) Hunter December 8th, 2007 9:41 pm

    Well Hello Everyone,

I am one of the original Swire’s from Grand Chenier, Louisiana, but I been in the Military since I was 18 years old. my brother’s happen to be Pumpkin, Ruedolph,Kieth, Asa, and Anthony Swire. I am damn proud of my roots and proud of where I come from. I think it’s amazing to me to look back at how wealthy my family was back then with all our homegrown vegetables, our cattle, all the alligator hunting, we use to do with my dad. the times we went fishing. we had a damn good life. I remember people picking on our last name because I could never figure out why, looking back, it seems maybe because we were better off than THEM hahahahaha!! I tell ya, I am out of the Army now, but I am married to a military man Jeffrey Hunter, who is a (Ranger First Sergeant in the Army) we have a baby girl who will be 2 on March 8, 2008. and I have a baby boy named Samuel Hayden Joesph Hunter. I so remember the times we went spot lighting for animals when we were not suppose to. I am just so excited over this song. My father Dudley Joesph Swire just died 6 months ago. I could not attend the funeral because I was pregnant. We are stationed at Ft Benning, GA. I miss the old days when we could go outside and do whatever the heck we wanted. life seemed so safe 30 years ago. TO my cousin’s, I saw you on here, Darrell, peggy and debbie I love you guys and boy do I miss Grand Chenier, LA, I wish I was a million air to bring it back the way it was before hurricane Rita, it breaks my heart, to see the way it is now. I would give anything to have the money to help build stores, schools, and homes for everyone. I wish one of those million dollar people like oprah would send some money there. if i ever become a millionare, that little place known as Grand Chenier will be a hot spot on the list of vacation spots. nothing better than go duck hunting in the swamp or spot lighting to kill some damn gators that kill all the dogs and chickens haha, but I have to say, life has been really hard watching dad suffer with cancer the last 5 years then him lose everything to Rita. then die before he could ever move back home. I really wish someone would help everyone down there. the people of Grand Chenier, and Cameron Parish worked there butts off to get back to where they were. the people of Katrina not all, but most waited on a hand out. you know you have damn good people when they get off there ass sick or not and clean on there own. just to come back to what we all call home. it makes me angry about Katrina, I am so sick of hearing people complain saying gimme gimme gimme, but not putting there ass to work. this is just another reason why I am so PROUD OF WHERE i COME FROM. I AM ONE DAMN PROUD CAJUN SWIRE FROM GRAND CHENIER. GOD BLESS, IF YOU KNOW ME, GIVE ME A HOLLAR. I AM ON MYSPACE AND I HAVE TONS OF PICS OF MY WONDERFUL FAMILY ON THERE. GOD BLESS TO ALL OF YOU NANCY DARLENE SWIRE HUNTER

I am a Swire from Grand Chenier. My mom was a Swire from Grand Chenier. We were all raised on either North Island or Kershaw Island in Grand Chenier. My students that I teach love the song and they laugh when I tell them that I am a “Swire from Grand Chenier”.
