Froggin’ n Huntin

Although Northern Louisiana is called "Sportsman’s Paradise" we’ve got quite a paradise down in Cajun Country as well. One of my favorite past times as a kid was hunting with my step-dad. I’d bring my BB gun but I always left my 4-10 at home. It’s potential "kick" always scared me.

My friend Dennis Menard recently sent me some great pictures that I think you will all enjoy. When he sent all the picture, he told me he practically lives outside and from the looks of the pictures, he’s not exaggerating.

When I showed my friends out here in California, they all mentioned how different of a life I must have had in Louisiana. It’s true, it was really different and I loved it. They especially liked the pictures of the children holding big ol bull frogs. "Kids out here would run screaming.." they said. hee. It’s probably true.

So now..on to the pictures..

The first picture you see there is of Dennis holding a gigantor bull frog. Frog hunting is done at night, I think. I’ve never done it myself but I recall my brother’s friends asking if we had a "big bull frog light" (the answer is yes) that they could use to go frog hunting the next morning before sunrise.

The other pictures are of Dennis’ children holding some of the other frogs he caught. Yum. If you wonder what we do with these frogs, we cut off their legs and fry it or throw it in a frog leg sauce piquante.

The next two pictures are of catfish and ducks. Delicious!

Personally, I believe that this is completely disgusting. I am an animal enthusiast; one that spends an unearthly amount of time in the animal world. I believe that, seeing as eating these frogs is not necessary to your survival, it is exceptionally incorrect. Yum? Why don’t you try teaching your children how to love/handle animals instead of how to fry their legs? I’m sorry, but that had to be said.
