Good Morning Acadiana!

It’s official – Maw-Maw and I are going to be on Good Morning Acadiana on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving! We are going to promote RealCajunRecipes.com by doing a cooking segment on KATC’s morning show. I’m excited that its KATC because they are actually the one’s that coined the term "Acadiana." I don’t think many people know that story so I may share it with the audience while maw-maw cooks away.

My mom recently surprised me with this cute cute cute apron and hat with our mascot, Alphonse on it. We plan to wear similiar aprons on the show :)

Like just about everyone, I’m really nervous speaking in front of people. I hope that I can get through the segments without too much stuttering.. this show is going to be live!

Learn Cajun French

I’m extremely excited! I’ve been a bit down lately about not knowing how to speak my mother’s first language, Cajun French and last Tuesday, I decided to do something about it.

For many years, I’d hear my mom speak French to her friends and accuse her of  “talking about us in French so we couldn’t understand”. I always thought that French was something you learned as an adult, not as a kid. After 26 years of waiting, I realized that my teaching was long overdue. Since having my mom teach me Cajun French would be impractical, I decided I’d have to learn it myself from a book — preferably an audiobook.

After reading a few reviews at Amazon, I decided to order “Cajun Self-Taught” by Rev. Jules O. Daigle. While Amazon was cheaper than the cover price, it was going to take one to two months for delivery! I thought it’d be better to support an independent record shop anyway and went with the oldest in Louisiana — Floyd’s Records. After waiting about a week, the book and CDs were delivered to my office in Los Angeles!

I’ve always wanted to share the sound of a Cajun accent with my friends on the Internet and now I finally can! I took the liberty of encoding Rev. Daigle teaching about telling time in Cajun French or as he calls it “Cajun.” Listed below is a 7 minute clip in Windows Media Format :)

Cajun French in Streaming Format (WMA)

If you don’t yet know Cajun French and like the idea of learning it, you can buy the audio cassetts or CDs and the book from FloydsRecords.com. Just do a search on their page for Cajun Self-Taught and include all words.

I’ll keep you all updated on my progress :-D

K-town Herald

RealCajunRecipes.com is featured in an article in this week’s edition of the Kaplan Herald. From what I can tell, we are even on the front page!

The Herald is a really small newspaper publication but I grew up with it and I’m proud to be on it. This is actually the second the time RCR is featured in it. The first time around comes with a funny story.

My Maw-maw LeMaire lived in the same apartment in Kaplan ever since I was born. After all her 8 kids moved out, she had to move into a smaller apartment. I visited her there one time and a week after the first RCR article appeared in the Herald, I was visiting Kaplan and I went to see my grandma again.

I approached my maw-maw’s apartment and knocked on the door. An unfamiliar face answered. She looked to be about my grandma’s age and was surprised to see this unknown visitor so late at night. "Uhhmm. You aren’t my grandma" I said, surprised. She laughed and said "No baby. Your grandma lives next door." Weird. How does she know? "How do you know who I am?", I asked. "Well sugar, I saw you in da paper."

At this point I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. "Only in a small town" I thought. I was glad to have my girlfriend, Delia, there to see it. She’s from the Bay area in California and this was quite a new experience for her.

So we’re back in the K-town paper and already people are signing our guestbook. Hoorah :-D I’d provide a direct link but because of spam bots, I disabled direct linking to the /guestbook/ section.

The article can be read here. Thanks Ms. Judy for letting us talk about our site in "da paper". We really appreciate it!

Cajun Music

A post below spoke about how we grew up with Cajun music being a part of our musical repertoire as much as pop, country, r&b and so on. I’ve been listening to KBON.com lately (bon means good in Cajun french) and recently donated my quarterly share to pay for bandwidth fees.

Cajun music reminds me of weekends spent Cajun dancing at Randol’s Seafood Resturant and Sundays spent waking up to the radio blaring KMDL’s weekly cajun radio program and my mom cooking up something great. That’s some of my fondest memories.. the smell that filled our house on Sunday mornings. My mom is such a great cook. I know everyone thinks that but my mom really is! ;) My friends tell me so. One of her favorite past times is inviting people from Louisiana over to her house in Phoenix and cooking up a feast. I love you, momma!

I recently found another great site that has high-quality Cajun mp3s for download along with descriptions for each song. The creator of the site put lots of time into it. It literally rocks.

Oh wow, while searching the web for Cajun music, I came upon feufollet.net which is the website for a Cajun French band lead by a bilingual 18 year old woman, Anna Laura Edmiston. Seems that she was born in Lafayette in 1986 and her mother spoke only French to her as a child. The two other bandmates, Chris Stafford and Chris Segura also appear to be able to speak french fluently. Ahh I admit, I’m green with envy. I want to speak Cajun French fluently so bad it hurts. Their music is very enjoyable.. check it out.

After you listen to feufollet, go listen to some other good Cajun music: streaming @ Kbon.com or downloadable mp3s at npmusic.org.

Froggin’ n Huntin

Although Northern Louisiana is called "Sportsman’s Paradise" we’ve got quite a paradise down in Cajun Country as well. One of my favorite past times as a kid was hunting with my step-dad. I’d bring my BB gun but I always left my 4-10 at home. It’s potential "kick" always scared me.

My friend Dennis Menard recently sent me some great pictures that I think you will all enjoy. When he sent all the picture, he told me he practically lives outside and from the looks of the pictures, he’s not exaggerating.

When I showed my friends out here in California, they all mentioned how different of a life I must have had in Louisiana. It’s true, it was really different and I loved it. They especially liked the pictures of the children holding big ol bull frogs. "Kids out here would run screaming.." they said. hee. It’s probably true.

So now..on to the pictures..

The first picture you see there is of Dennis holding a gigantor bull frog. Frog hunting is done at night, I think. I’ve never done it myself but I recall my brother’s friends asking if we had a "big bull frog light" (the answer is yes) that they could use to go frog hunting the next morning before sunrise.

The other pictures are of Dennis’ children holding some of the other frogs he caught. Yum. If you wonder what we do with these frogs, we cut off their legs and fry it or throw it in a frog leg sauce piquante.

The next two pictures are of catfish and ducks. Delicious!
